After Nebraska got its man in Bo Pelini, Louisiana State defensive coordinator, it looked like the Cornhuskers had left the door open for Duke to secure Navy’s Paul Johnson as its new head coach.
But now it seems another horse has joined the race for Johnson: Georgia Tech.
The Yellow Jackets had made it clear they were interested in Connecticut’s Randy Edsall, who helped lead the Huskies to a share of the Big East title in just its sixth season in Division I-A. Edsall met with Georgia Tech officials earlier this week to discuss the opening, but announced yesterday that he would not be leaving Connecticut.
“I’ll stay as long as you’ll have me,” he told the audience at the team’s end-of-year banquet, which came just hours after a No.2 West Virginia loss to Pittsburgh put Connecticut into a first-place tie in the conference.
Now Georgia Tech must look elsewhere to fill its open spot, and many have pointed to Johnson as a logical fit. Most known for his potent, triple-option offense, Johnson coached Georgia Southern to two D-IAA championships before taking over the Midshipmen.
The coach has said in recent years he would like to prove his offense’s worth in one of the BCS conferences, after many people labeled the run-heavy attack as a ’service academy offense.’ The Duke job has received a lot of flak recently as one of the least desirable positions in D-IA, so Director of Athletics Joe Alleva will most likely have to pony up some serious cash and added incentives in order to lure Johnson, or any other big-name coach, for that matter, to Durham next year.
