In K-ville, anything goes

At this time last year, if someone had told us that we would be in college paying $48,000 for tuition and sleeping in a tent in 25-degree weather with seven other people for a two-hour basketball game, we would have called them crazy. But here we are, one year later, doing exact that; so call us Cameron Crazy.

During the height of the tenting frenzy, we were given the opportunity to work on a story about health in Krzyzewskiville and jumped on the chance. We already had some interesting experiences ourselves and were more than aware of the health concerns involved in tenting, but wanted to hear what others had to say.

Two weeks later, after drunken conversations and harassing phone calls at midnight, we realized what an experience it has been writing this story.

We appreciated how honest the students were in sharing their tenting stories with us. We received both comical and serious responses. One student related to us about how he was offered a fifth of a handle of Grey Goose vodka in order to take someone’s shift for one night in the tent. Another student said he resorted to pulling food out of the trashcan because he was so hungry.

Other students, however, voiced genuine problems that we could relate to as tenters.

“Everyone is constantly frustrated with each other, but no one wants to voice it because they’re so close with each other,” freshman Will Olcott said about the stress of scheduling shifts.

Nonetheless, tenting is a tradition that has been with us since 1986, and we know the dedicated fans are always willing to stick it out.

And besides, when we witness the winning shot at the Carolina game, it’ll be worth every frozen limb and life-threatening illness that we’ve incurred.

No pressure.
